What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

HBOT is a medical treatment that uses pure oxygen at two-to-three-times atmospheric pressure to aid in healing wounds. It is also used primarily to treat decompression sickness (the bends), arterial gas embolism, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Back to Questions

What does HBOT do?

  • Increases the amount of oxygen being delivered to the body’s tissues
  • Helps fight infection by:
    • Inhibiting and inactivating toxins
    • Improving white blood cell activity
    • Inactivating or killing certain bacteria
    • Enhancing the effectiveness of certain antibiotics

  • Allows the body’s immune system to more effectively build tissues
  • Stimulates growth of new microvascular blood vessels
  • Reduces swelling and inflammation
  • Stimulates fibroblast activity to build collagen
  • Shrinks bubbles (important for decompression sickness and gas embolism)

Back to Questions

What should I expect during my treatment?

During your treatment you will relax on a stretcher in an acrylic see-through chamber where you can watch TV or a movie, or you can sleep.

Most treatments last approximately two hours.

You may experience a crackling or fullness in your ears, similar to that which you may feel when you are in an airplane or in a car coming down from a high elevation. This is usually not painful and the hyperbaric staff will teach you some techniques to clear your ears.

Back to Questions

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies according to the condition for which you are being treated. Some conditions require only one or two treatments, but most require 30 to 40, even up to 60 sessions.

Normally the treatments are administered daily, Monday through Friday.

Your particular treatment course will be determined by the hyperbaric staff and will be discussed with you during your initial evaluation.

Back to Questions

Are there any side effects?

Patients usually don’t experience any discomfort during their treatment.

In rare instances, patients report a change in their vision, whereby their near vision improved and far vision worsened. If this occurs please do not change your eyewear prescription as these effects are temporary.

As with any medical treatments or procedures there are risks associated with HBOT, but these are rare and will be discussed with you during your initial evaluation.

Back to Questions

Is HBOT covered by insurance?

Medicare will cover most of the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) -approved indications for HBOT and most private insurance companies will follow Medicare rules. We will review your insurance plan before you start therapy and inform you of your estimated out-of-pocket costs.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us at 860-714-3010.

We will be available from 8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, to answer any questions you may have.
