Hospital Medicine

In the Hospital, In Good Hands

Surendra Khera Welcome to the Hospital Medicine Service at Saint Francis. In many cases, we are the doctors who will be responsible for your care in the hospital. Our team is dedicated to providing the best in-patient care and to teaching the next generation of physicians.

Hospital medicine is a relatively new discipline and we are proud to introduce ourselves. In December 2006, we launched the Academic Inpatient Medical Service (AIMS) at Saint Francis. As the name implies, the goal was to combine high-quality clinical care with the academic mission of a major teaching hospital to provide the best possible hospital experience for our patients.

Trusted Partners

At the time, the healthcare landscape was changing with a growing number of primary care physicians opting to refer their patients to trusted hospitalists for inpatient care, while they focused on caring for patients in their offices. We started with a single primary care physician referring patients to us. Now, thanks to support from our partners in the community and the trust of our patients, our group is the largest provider of inpatient care at Saint Francis, with a primary care referral base of more than 50 private practice providers. Our trainees haveHospital Medicine honored us with Teacher of the Year awards in almost every year since we started; we have met national and hospital quality benchmarks and we have been recognized as providers of high-quality, value-driven care.

The secret to our success is no secret and every corporation or business knows it: hire the best, provide good service and dream big.

Excellent Doctors

We have an excellent group of 22 and soon-to-be 30 physicians and a superb support staff that works tirelessly behind the scenes. Above all we have unflinching support from our patients and our physician-partners in the community.

As the Academic Inpatient Medical Service (AIMS) continues to grow at Saint Francis, I would like to leave you with my favorite quote from Dr. Avedis Donabedien, a pioneer in health quality research. His words define our mission, vision and goals:

Systems awareness and systems design are important for health professionals, but they are not enough. They are enabling mechanisms only. It is the ethical dimensions of individuals that are essential to a system’s success. Ultimately, the secret of quality is love. You have to love your patient, you have to love your profession and you have to love your God. If you have love, you can then work backward to monitor and improve the system.
-Avedis Donabedian

At Saint Francis, we truly love what we do, and everyone — our patients, our partners, our students and our hospital — reaps the benefits. Thank you for trusting us to provide care for inpatients at Saint Francis.
