Women's Heart Program(2)

Anita Kelsey"Heart disease is the biggest health threat that women will face:  It is the number one killer of women in the United States.  The good news is that women’s heart disease is preventable. There are steps women can take early on to reduce the risk through assessment, exercise and nutrition.”
- Dr. Anita Kelsey, director of the Women’s Heart Program at the The Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute of Connecticut.

The Women’s Heart Program is offered free to any woman over 18. It is designed to help women take a proactive approach to heart disease through education and increased awareness. Participants receive an individual risk assessment and a two-hour education session provided by a registered nurse, a registered dietician, and an exercise physiologist. The staff of the Women's Heart Program will assist you in developing individualized goals for reducing your risk of heart disease, making appropriate dietary changes, and beginning a structured exercise program.

Here's what you can expect:

  1. The first step is a comprehensive, 1 1/2 hour-evaluation, where a complete assessment of cardiac risk factors is examined and education is provided.
  2. Next, a nutritionist offers participants a nutrition evaluation and recommendations for dietary modifications.
  3. Then, a structured exercise program is developed and tailored around each woman's personal daily routine.
  4. Finally, your risk assessment information and recommendations will be sent to your doctor with any recommended follow-up treatment, if necessary. All medical therapies will be provided by your doctor.
Eighty percent of heart attacks are preventable. Knowing if you are at risk is the first step. Watch a Fox News interview with Dr. Kelsey to learn more
