Besides bariatric surgery, his clinical interests include Laparoscopic Colon surgery, Anti-reflux surgery and repair of abdominal wall hernias.
Ioannis Raftopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S., has been named Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

In his new role, Dr. Raftopoulos will lead the Bariatric Center at Saint Francis, which was recently approved by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the Surgical Review Corporation as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. This voluntary designation is bestowed upon Bariatric centers meeting rigorous criteria, including the availability of resources to perform safe Bariatric surgical procedures and demonstrated short- and long-term results after Bariatric surgery.

Dr. Raftopoulos has served as a medical officer in the Greek Air Force and as a resident in General Surgery at the Metropolitan Group Hospitals/University of Illinois, Chicago. He also completed a Fellowship in Laparoscopic and Bariatric surgery at Western Pennsylvania Hospital/Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Dr. Raftopoulos has been named a Bariatric Surgeon of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Raftopoulos is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

Most recently, Dr. Raftopoulos was on the staff of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and held an appointment as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is one of the largest Bariatric centers of excellence in the country and among five centers that participate in an important study funded by the National Institutes of Health to examine the outcomes of Bariatric surgery (Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery – LABS). Dr. Raftopoulos has been a co-investigator in this study. In addition, his scientific work includes 70 peer reviewed publications, over 50 presentations in national and international meetings, and active participation as primary investigator or co-investigator in research grants.
