SAINT FRANCIS AWARDED RADIOLOGY ACCREDITATIONS Action Follows American College of Radiology Review

(HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 20, 2010) - The Department of Radiology and Imaging Services at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has been awarded three important accreditations by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The Hospital's computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) services have each received a three-year term of accreditation following a recent ACR review. In addition, the Hospital's ultrasound services have received ACR accreditation for breast imaging, general, and vascular imaging.

Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and better treat medical conditions. Ultrasound imaging of the breast produces a picture of the internal structures of the breast.

CT scanning - sometimes called CAT scanning - is a noninvasive medical imaging test that helps physicians diagnose and tailor treatments for various conditions, especially cancer, stroke, atherosclerotic disease, fractures, and appendicitis.

PET/CT Scan is a type of nuclear medicine imaging that combines positron emission tomography and CT Scan imaging technologies to provide detailed images of the body and is most often used to distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous cells.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, and the delivery of comprehensive health services.
