Library Services

The Magowan Health Sciences Library provides comprehensive, up-to-date information services and resources to meet the needs of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and The Rehabilitation Hospital of Connecticut.

Information Services
Librarians provide guidance to all employees in using the library and finding materials. Users should discuss their requests with a librarian, either in person or over the phone. Librarians will do a literature search and evaluate the bibliographic citations obtained for relevance. The reference staff offers formal and informal training sessions on using the library's main databases.

Librarian-Mediated Computer Searches
Librarians have access to the Internet and to the online databases offered by a variety of vendors. Whether users need health care, management or research-related information, it is available via the library's resources. Library users may search the OVID versions of MEDLINE, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) and several Ebsco databases.

Instructional Assistance
Librarians provide guidance to all employees in using the library and its resources. In addition to performing literature searches, librarians offer quick reference help and assistance with using the libraries' networked databases. Staff are happy to schedule one-on-one instructional sessions, as well as personal orientations to services and resources.

Library Borrowing
The library's collection is available to staff and affiliates on all campuses. Most books may be checked out for a 21-day period. Circulation periods are shorter for certain types of materials.

Interlibrary Loans
When the articles or other materials needed for hospital-related business are not available in the library, they can be obtained in most cases from other libraries. Library staff can obtain urgently needed material.

Computer Resources
The Magowan Health Sciences Library has a number of computers available for use by patrons. They provide access to the library's bibliographic and full-text databases.
