(HARTFORD, Conn.) – Socorro Vargas, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E., of Oakdale, has joined the Medical and Dental Staff of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.
Dr. Vargas received her medical degree from the University of the Philippines. She completed internal medicine residencies and fellowship training in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, and clinical nutrition at the University of the Philippines Health Sciences Center/Philippine General Hospital and the University of Connecticut Health Center. Upon completing her fellowship, she joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
While in academic medicine, Dr. Vargas’ research interests focused on the effects of parathyroid horomone, cytokines and prostaglandins on bone. Her research was supported by grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs. She was a visiting research fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia, where her research focus was parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP).
Dr. Vargas was previously in clinical practice in Western Connecticut and was on the staffs of Danbury, New Milford and Sharon Hospitals. Most recently, she was on the staff of the William W. Backus Hospital Endocrinology and Diabetes Management Center, Norwich. At Saint Francis, she is practicing as a member of Saint Francis Medical Group, Inc., and is currently accepting new patients. Her specific clinical interests focus on diabetes mellitus, obesity, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, calcium and bone metabolism.
Dr. Vargas is board certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Vargas is a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, Endocrine Society, American College of Physicians, American Diabetes Association, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and National Osteoporosis Foundation.
Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
