This is a comprehensive education program to encourage teens to make healthy decisions in risky situations. It is presented by theViolence and Injury Prevention Program of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. The Goal of the program is to encourage teens to make "healthy choices in risky situations". Participants learn that traumatic injuries claim the lives of more Americans under age 34 than AIDS, cancer, and heart disease combined. Staff who are regularly confronted with the tragic aftermath of drinking and driving stress the fact that alcohol and drugs are a factor in 70% of all traffic deaths in the United States.
During the "Let’s not Meet by Accident" program, participants :
- Visit the helipad where LifeStar medical helicopters land, carrying accident victims
Go to the Emergency Department trauma resuscitation room to observe a "mock" trauma
Hear a speaker whose life has been directly affected by injuries or fatalities suffered due to a traumatic injury
Groups up to 60 persons can be accommodated. Teachers, parents and other family members are encouraged to attend with students. Two programs per month are scheduled.
