Leo Otake, M.D., Ph.D., Appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at Saint Francis

Dr. Leo Otake (Hartford, Conn. May 2, 2013) - Leo Otake, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Reconstructive Breast and Microsurgery, of New Haven, has been appointed Chief of Plastic Surgery at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. 

            Dr. Otake succeeds Steve Belinkie, M.D., who recently retired. As Chief of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Otake will expand the breadth and reach of plastic surgery services at Saint Francis and partner organizations in the greater Hartford area. Education of medical residents and students in concert with clinical service line development will also be a top priority. Dr. Otake has been practicing at Saint Francis since 2011.

Dr. Otake is active in sharing his expertise with organizations dedicated to the application and delivery of plastic surgery care to patients around the world. In collaboration with Operation Smile, he initiated one of the largest studies to date in search of genes responsible for cleft lip and palate. He has authored articles on telemedicine technologies to facilitate delivery of expert care to distant global sites, collaborating with surgeons in Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Nepal and Zambia. Dr. Otake has also joined teams of surgeons to deliver surgical services to the Amazon region of Brazil, Honduras and Jordan.  

Dr. Otake completed his residency training in Plastic Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and further specialized training in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He graduated with honors from Yale School of Medicine and Yale Graduate School, completing both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. Dr. Otake was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. 

Board certified in plastic surgery, Dr. Otake is a member of the honor society Phi Beta Kappa. He has authored book chapters and papers regarding topics in the basic sciences and contemporary reconstructive surgery.
