Physician Sketch:
Dr. Tutschka received his Medical Degree from the University of Munich, Munich, Germany and a Doctorate from the Institute for Hematologie in Munich. He served as an Intern in hospitals in Germany before becoming a Fellow in Oncology Research at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Fellowship Training in Medical Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation.

In 1976, he became Deputy Director of the John Hopkins Bone Marrow Transplant Program, an Assistant Professor in Medicine and Oncology in 1976, and an Associate Professor in Medicine and Oncology in 1980. He left for Ohio State University in 1983 as Professor of Medicine, Professor of Pathology, and Director of the Division of Bone Marrow Transplantation. In 1993, he came to Connecticut as Professor of Medicine and holder of the PHS-ARC Chair in Transfusion Medicine to head the University of Connecticut Bone Marrow Transplant Program and later the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. In October 2001, he was appointed the Director of the Section of Hematology and Oncology at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Physician-in-Chief at Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center.

During his scientific career of more than 30 years he has authored more than 400 publications. He is regarded as a pioneer in the science and clinical art of Bone Marrow Transplantation, and has gained an international reputation in this field. Among his many scientific accomplishments are the concepts of:

  • Space in Bone Marrow Transplantation
  • The introduction of Busulfan into Transplantation
  • The introduction of Cyclosporine into Bone Marrow Transplantation in America
  • The elucidation of the mechanism of action of Cyclosporine
  • the mechanism of Immunological Tolerance in Bone Marrow Transplantation
  • The pathophysiology of Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease
  • The concept of Autologous Graft Versus Host Disease
  • Numerous therapeutic advances such as phototherapy for Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease
  • The ablation of Tumor Stem Cells for curative Transplant Therapy
  • The introduction of the Busulfan-Cytoxan Regimen, which is now used world-wide.
A Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Tutschka is a founding member of the International Society for Experimental Hematology and a member of numerous prestigious professional societies. He has served as a Full Member of the Immunobiology Study Section of the National Institute of Health, and has received numerous awards. He has been named Best Doctor in America� for 1999, 2000, and 2001, and Best Doctor for Women� in 2001. He holds an appointment as Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
