Excellence in medical training and education has kept Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center a leader in health care in the New England region. Our programs demonstrate the commitment to the importance of integration of appropriate research and teaching initiatives to enhance the value of clinical services. At Saint Francis, we offer a full range of medical and surgical treatments, as well as specialized, acute and rehabilitative services throughout our 617- bed multi-facility center.
Saint Francis has a long established partnership with the University of Connecticut Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, and provides participant training and clinical rotation in Internal Medicine, as well as integrated and supplemental residency programs. Our residency programs are managed by the Hospital Committee for Graduate Medical Education, which is responsible for preparation, development of policies, offering recommendations, preparation and maintenance of General Requirements for Graduate Education Programs.
Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center offers residency and fellowship medical training programs in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Colorectal Surgery, Podiatric Surgery and Dentistry, which are accredited, respectively by, the Accreditation Council For Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the Commission On Dental Accreditation-American Dental Association
Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers a fully approved, four-year program with four house officers at each level. The program is based at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. It includes four years of graduate education, including 46 months on obstetrics and gynecology and a two-month rotation at the University of Connecticut Health Center (John Dempsey Hospital) in Farmington during the third year.
A postgraduate fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine is also available. Entry into the program at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center is made at the first graduate year level through the National Residency Matching Program utilizing the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).
Podiatric Surgery
Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center offers an approved PSR-24 with transitioning to a PM&S-36 residency program in podiatric medicine and surgery with three house officers at each level. There are approximately 30 active attending podiatric surgeons on staff, and most are ABPS diplomates. Rotations at Saint Francis include: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Disease, Plastic Surgery, Anesthesiology, Vascular Surgery, Pathology, Dermatology, Pediatrics and others. There is also a busy podiatry clinic at the Burgdorf/Fleet Health Center, among other clinics. Additional podiatric surgery exposure is achieved at many local area hospitals and surgery centers including the Mount Sinai campus of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Manchester Memorial Hospital, Bristol Hospital, Rockville General Hospital, Johnson Surgery Center, Middlesex Hospital/Surgery Center, Waterbury Hospital and the Hartford Surgery Center. For more information, call the Podiatric Surgery Office at 860 714-5911.
Dentistry
The General Practice Residency is fully accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation and conforms to the ADA Standards for Advanced Education Programs in General Practice Residency. The dental department has two recently constructed, state-of-the-art dental facilities with a total of 25 operatories. We have a large supporting staff of clinical personnel, including hygienists, and clerical personnel. We have an in-house dental laboratory with two full-time dental laboratory technicians.
Family Medicine
The Family Practice Residency Program prepares a family physician for meeting future opportunities by providing the best of both worlds: the academic stimulation by university faculty combined with the supportive environment and services of a community hospital. It prepares Family Practice residents for any of the three faces of New England health care: rural/suburban practice, urban practice and academics. The Family Practice Residency is a cooperative program with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Saint Francis' Asylum Hill Family Practice Center. For more information:
