Description of the Residency Program

Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has offered a pharmacy practice residency in conjunction with the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy since July 2000.Our program was awarded ASHP accreditation in November of 2002. Since inception, the program has addressed the individual needs of our residents while adhering to the principles and philosophies described in the ASHP Standards for Pharmacy Practice Residency Training. Pharmacists completing the residency program will demonstrate confidence and competence in multiple patient-care settings, assumption of the responsibility for pharmaceutical care outcomes, and leadership skills necessary to function as an independent member of the healthcare team.

The resident will complete a minimum of 48 weeks of experience with satisfactory achievement of goals in the four core areas of learning

  • acute patient care
  • ambulatory patient care
  • drug information/drug policy
  • practice management

Residents will complete a longitudinal pharmacy practice (service/staffing) component, a longitudinal ambulatory care component and they will complete and present a major project. Residents may choose elective care rotations to complement their required core rotations. Elective care rotations include

  • medication safety
  • cardiology intensive care
  • medical intensive care
  • surgical intensive care
  • women's health
  • neonatal intensive care
  • hematology/oncology
  • anticoagulation care
  • behavioral health
  • infectious diseases clinic
  • family medicine
  • pharmaceutical industry
  • nuclear pharmacy
  • managed care
