Teaching and Research
Back

Our institution, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, is a teaching hospital. It is the major University of Connecticut School of Medicine teaching facility for the clinical training in hematology and oncology. Residents and fellows are instructed here by the Saint Francis / Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center Faculty in the art of healing malignant diseases. Residents are young physicians who have graduated from medical school and are receiving specialized training in internal medicine. Hematology and oncology fellows are physicians who have already completed their training as specialists in internal mdicine and are receiving additional training as subspecialists in cancer medicine. Together with the faculty members, all these physicians form a treatment team that permits a most comprehensive approach to the patient and at the same time increases the knowledge base and the skills of our young physicians. The training program in medical oncology and hematology is under the supervision of Richard Edwards, M.D. Throughout the year the Cancer Center holds numerous lectures, tumor boards and conferences, where not only the physicians and staff of the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, but also the medical community at large and the lay population are educated in the newest advances in cancer medicine. These educational efforts culminate in the annual Saint Francis Hematology and Oncology Symposium held in October. This year's event, the 13th Annual Symposium, was held over a two-day period. An international faculty of renowned experts discussed the newest concepts in translational research in oncology and in bone marrow transplantation with the theme “From the Bench to the Bedside”.

To be on the forefront of cancer medicine and to offer to our patients the most novel treatment approaches, requires the Cancer Center to participate in national and international research studies. In these studies, the newest advances are tested and compared to more standardized approaches. To properly conduct these studies in a safe and efficient manner, we have established a Clinical Research Office that is responsible for the conduct of the studies. The Research Office is under the direction of Jonathan Sporn, M.D. and is staffed with three research nurses, a research assistant, and a secretary. This enables the Saint Francis / Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center to participate in protocol studies sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), national and international study groups such as ECOG and GOG and drug therapy studies sponsored by research institutions or pharmaceutical companies. An important mandate of the Research Office is to assure that the patient receives full information about the study so that the patient can give a truly informed consent.
