Anti-Coagulation Services
Back

The Section of Hematology/Oncology provides a full spectrum of consultative and clinical management services for patients with thrombotic and bleeding disorders.

The staff of the coagulation service is available to provide:

  • expert consultation for patients with known or suspected bleeding disorders including: hemophilia A and B, von Willebrand's disease, acquired disorders of blood coagulation (circulating inhibitors, liver disease, DIC, etc.), platelet function defects (congenital or acquired), thrombocytopenia and other causes of excess bleeding.

  • expert consultation for patients with known or suspected thrombotic disorders including venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, thrombophilia (e.g. factor V Leiden, Protein C deficiency, antiphospholipid antibodies, homocysteinemia, etc.), heparin-associated thrombocytopenia and thrombosis, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and other causes of thrombosis.

  • expert management of patients taking oral anticoagulants for the treatment of patients with venous thrombosis, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, artificial heart valves, stroke or cardiomyopathy.

  • outpatient anticoagulation for the acute and chronic management of patients with documented deep venous thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. This would include initial treatment with low molecular weight heparin followed by long term therapy with oral anticoagulation.

  • alternative anticoagulation therapy for patients who are unable to receive heparin (generally, patients with suspected or a previously documented episode of heparin-associated thrombocytopenia).

  • expert management of anticoagulation during pregnancy for women who are at high risk of venous thrombosis or fetal loss due to a prior history of thromboembolism or have a known hypercoagulable condition.

  • “bridging” anticoagulation for patients who are on oral anticoagulants and need temporary cessation of anticoagulation prior to surgery or other invasive procedures.

  • education to patients and their families regarding disorders of hemostasis and thrombosis as well as the use of anticoagulant medications.

A physician, three nurses and three pharmacists staff the coagulation service. The director of the coagulation service, Richard Edwards, M.D. is a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and hematology and has extensive clinical and research experience in the areas of blood coagulation and thrombotic disorders. The nurses and pharmacists have more than 30 years experience in the management of adult and pediatric patients with coagulation disorders.

The anticoagulation service is located on the second floor of the Saint Francis/Mount Sinai Regional Cancer Center. Physicians may refer patients by calling the coagulation service at 860-714-4732 or 860-714-5592 and by completing a referral form.
