Transmyocardial Revascularization
Back

Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR) is a surgical procedure that improves blood flow and relieves chest pain.

In TMR, a surgeon creates new bloodlines in oxygen-deprived heart muscle. Clinical research has demonstrated that the creation of these bloodlines provides oxygen-rich blood to previously deprived areas of the heart.

The procedure is performed on a beating heart through a small incision in the left chest and does not require a heart-lung machine. Using a high-energy, computer-synchronized carbon dioxide laser, the surgeon creates between 20 and 40 one-millimeter-wide channels into the the left ventricle of the heart.

TMR is used to treat patients with coronary artery disease who are suffering from severe angina that is not treatable with either bypass surgery or angioplasty
