Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones weaken and become brittle. Ten million Americans are affected by osteoporosis and 18 million more are at risk. The loss of bone density and strength resulting from osteoporosis can cause painful fractures of the spine.
A new minimally invasive surgical procedure called Kyphoplasty employs a patented balloon to treat compression fractures. The balloon is inserted through tiny incisions along the spine and then inflated to expand the broken bone. Then bone cement is injected into the fracture. This restores height and stabilizes the compressed vertebra.
The fractures are best treated when they are less than four months old. Patients who are severely stooped forward from old compression fractures are not candidates for Kyphoplasty.
The results of Kyphoplasty have been excellent. Patients report an immediate reduction in pain. They are able to return to their previous activities. Patients can get up and walk immediately following surgery.
