HARTFORD, Conn.) -- The Diabetes Care Center at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, established in 1982 and now Connecticuts oldest comprehensive outpatient diabetes center, has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for a quality diabetes self-management education program. The Diabetes Care Center has maintained continuous recognition by the ADA since 1989.
The ADA Recognition Program is based on standards for diabetes self-management education programs established by the National Diabetes Advisory Board. Certification signifies that a program has a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide patients with comprehensive information about diabetes management.
Saint Francis Diabetes Care Center assists patients in controlling blood sugar levels by providing, in collaboration with their primary care physicians, medically-supervised instruction in diet, exercise, medication and self-testing.
"We are pleased to receive this continued recognition from the ADA as it represents the highest possible endorsement that a diabetes self-management program can achieve," said Emmanuel Javier, M.D., Acting Chief of Endocrinology and Diabetes.
"Diabetes is a major public health issue, with 14.6 million diagnosed Americans. Saint Francis remains committed to educating and treating patients with this disease," said Rolf Knoll, M.D., Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs.
Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
