(7/30/2007) SAINT FRANCIS INTRODUCES THE CONNECTICUT JOINT REPLACEMENT INSTITUTE (CJRI)

08/06/2007

(Hartford, Conn) Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has announced the establishment of a new, dedicated joint replacement institute on its main campus.

A hospital in the hospital, the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute at Saint Francis (CJRI), is comprised of leading-edge orthopedic surgeons who are fellowship-trained and nationally recognized as experts in the field of joint replacement.

Dedicated areas have been designated to accommodate the growing demand for joint replacement surgeries. The facility consists of six operating rooms, a pre-op prep and recovery area, a registration/waiting area, and two post-acute patient floors.

Given the aging baby boomer generation, the need for joint replacement procedures is expected to substantially grow nationwide by 2030. It is estimated that the total number of primary total hip replacements will grow by 174 percent to 572,000 procedures a year. The total number of primary knee replacements is predicted to soar by 673 percent, to 3.48 million surgeries.

In order to meet a growing demand for joint replacements, we have established a state-of-the-art facility, and have assembled a highly experienced staff of board-certified surgeons, nurses, and therapists who will provide expert care to those patients needing joint replacement procedures, said Christopher Dadlez, President and CEO of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

With the establishment of this facility, over 2,500 joint replacement surgeries are expected to be performed at Saint Francis in the coming year.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
