SAINT FRANCIS NAMES STROKE CENTER DIRECTOR
Phaniraj Iyengar, M.D., To Fill Post

(HARTFORD, Conn.) -- Phaniraj Iyengar, M.D., has been named Director of The Stroke Center at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Iyengar received his medical degree from the University of Bombay and Goa Medical College, Panaji, Goa, India, in 1988. Following a one-year compulsory rotating internship, he began training in surgery and neurosurgery in India and then in the United Kingdom, before moving to the United States in 1995. Dr. Iyengar then served an internship at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, New Haven, and a two-year preliminary surgical residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, N.Y. He also completed a neurology residency at the University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, Calif., followed by a one-year fellowship in neurovascular and stroke medicine at the Barrow Neurological Institute at Saint Joseph Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix.

Dr. Iyengar is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and its subspecialty board on vascular neurology. He is also certified in CT and MRI imaging by the American Society of Neuroimaging. Dr. Iyengar is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Stroke Association, American Society of Neuroimaging, American Headache Society, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the American Association of Physicians of India.

Dr. Iyengar most recently served as the Director of the North Valley Stroke Center at North Valley Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Sacramento and Roseville, Calif.

Founded in 1897, Saint Francis is a major teaching hospital licensed for 617 acute inpatient beds and 65 bassinets and is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
