This is a busy clinical fellowship where the trainee will experience daily teaching by first assisting, and then performing a broad variety of common, as well as some infrequent, advanced laparoscopic procedures. With the aide a second year surgical house staff and physicians assistant, the fellow manages the pre and post operative care of the Minimally Invasive Surgery/Bariatric service. At least one clinical research project will be required during the year. The fellow will also attend the SAGES meeting.
Ibrahim M. Daoud, MD, fellowship program director, is a national expert and innovator in both minimally invasive inguinal and ventral hernia repair, of which he repairs 10-15 per week. He conducts monthly training program for general surgeons from the whole country. He has been doing Laparoscopic surgery since 1990. The fellow runs the laparoscopic service with a 2nd year resident and a PA. The fellow operates 5 days a week. We go the the wet lab 6 times a year. The fellow is on call one week end a month and every tuesday. Carlos Barba, M.D.
is the interim director of Bariatric Surgery and performs 10-12 bariatric procedures per week including laparoscopic Roux-n-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic gastric banding procedure. We performed over 1700 laparoscopic cases in the past 3 years, of which 700 cases were not covered by the residents due to their 80 hour work week.
