A bequest is a gift made through your will. Over the years, bequests have played a vital part in the continuing financial strength of Saint Francis. Bequests can be arranged very simply by adding a codicil to an existing will, or can be included when you declare or rewrite your will.
Bequests help to reduce estate taxes, as they qualify for the unlimited estate tax charitable deduction. There are a variety of ways to provide charitable gifts through your will.
Residual Bequest: After family members have received their individual inheritances, you can direct any remaining portion of your estate to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. (Example: All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, whether real or personal property, whether now by me or hereafter acquired, and wherever located, I give, devise and bequeath to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, to be used for its general objectives and purposes.)
Specific Bequest: You may direct that a specific percentage of your estate, a dollar amount, or specific securities or property, be given to the Hospital. (Example: I give, devise and bequeath to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center __________percent of my estate, or, the sum of $____________, or, the following named securities or property, to be used for its general objectives and purposes.)
Contingent Bequest: You may direct that a bequest to the Hospital will be made in the event that the primary heir under your will predeceases you. (Example: Should the above named individual predecease me, then her/his bequest shall pass to Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, as contingent beneficiary.)
