(HARTFORD, Conn.) The Rehabilitation Hospital of Connecticut, a Saint Francis Care provider, is changing its name to Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital.
This move is being made in recognition of the fifteen-year anniversary of the affiliation between Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and the former Mount Sinai Hospital. It establishes a clearer bond between our rehabilitation facility, located on the Mount Sinai campus, and the Saint Francis family, said Christopher M. Dadlez, Saint Francis President and Chief Executive Officer.
Established in 1995, the 60-bed institution provides comprehensive medical rehabilitation programs designed to prevent and minimize disabilities and to assist
people in rebuilding their lives after significant illnesses and injuries. Included are major programs in traumatic brain injury, stroke/neurological rehabilitation and sports medicine, including spinal cord injury and orthopedics.
As the only acute rehabilitation hospital in Connecticut, we are proud to provide unique healthcare services and we consider our new name an important asset in furthering our mission of caring and compassion, which is the legacy of the former Mount Sinai Hospital, said Paul Stillman, Vice President, Mount Sinai campus.
The former Mount Sinai Hospital first opened in 1923 in the Morgan Brainard Mansion on Hartfords Capitol Avenue. In 1950, it relocated to Blue Hills Avenue, the site of the present Mount Sinai campus. In 1990, Mount Sinai and Saint Francis became the first Jewish and Catholic hospitals in the United States to affiliate. In 1995, the two hospitals completed a formal corporate merger.
This is a significant recognition of the role that Mount Sinai traditions have played in the development of Saint Francis over the past decade and a half, said Henry S. Scherer, Jr., a member of the Mount Sinai Board of Trustees at the time of the affiliation and currently a member of the present Saint Francis Board of Directors. I think its a marvelous tribute to the legacy that today is evident in the good will and effort being put forth by people in the community who continue to work together to enrich the lives of patients.
Joyce Mandell, a member of the Saint Francis Board of Directors, said: The Rehabilitation Hospital is a visible symbol of the results produced by the combination of
the rich traditions and heritage of both Saint Francis and Mount Sinai. The sum truly is greater than the individual parts.
One of five Saint Francis Care centers of excellence, the Rehabilitation Hospital last year admitted patients referred to it from over 30 hospitals in the region.
