There are many situations that your teen may be faced with which may include engaging in
risky behaviors that can endanger their life. Here at Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Centers
Violence & Injury Prevention Program, our mission is to E.R.A.S.E. violence and injury through
Education, Research, Advocacy, and SErvice. One way that we do this is through our Lets Not
Meet By Accident program for high school students (ages 12 20). The program encourages the
teens to make healthy choices in risky situations. Research that we conducted with the students
participating in the program shows:
76% have had an alcoholic beverage.
43% have had marijuana.
49% have driven in a car with someone who had done drugs.
39% have been a passenger in a car with someone who had been drinking.
15% feel it is ok for a designated driver to have 1 2 drinks.
We know that teens are supposed to challenge themselves and their limits, but we also know that
horrible consequences can sometimes result.
Talking to each other about these situations, and
planning what to do in emergencies, can often PREVENT injuries and even death.
Included in this is
A Letter from a parent whose child made an unhealthy choice in a risky situation, and the impact
that decision had on everyone involved.
A Contract for Life to ensure that your teen can call you or another responsible adult if they are
in a compromising situation without fear of punishment.
We urge you to sign the contract with your teen so that they know they understand that you
and/or your family are approachable when they are in trouble or when they want to get out
of an uncomfortable situation ~ no matter what the circumstances are.
These are especially important conversations to have this time of year. Thank you very much.
