The department has two Varian linear accelerators to deliver the daily radiation treatments. The linacs offer high-energy photon and electron beam treatments not available at smaller facilities. The machines were upgraded in 2004 with new multileaf collimators and electronic portal imaging. To help provide the highest degree of precision in delivering the radiation treatments, Saint Francis has installed a new optical array alignment system using infrared cameras to automatically detect a patient's position with sub-millimeter accuracy. When combined with a specialized ultrasound device, it offers the most accurate means of directing the radiation beams in the use of IMRT for the treatment of prostate cancer.
State-of-the-art radiation therapy techniques using 3-D conformal radiotherapy and IMRT require precise three-dimensional imaging of patients. Saint Francis is the only center in the Greater Hartford region to have its own dedicated CT scanner for imaging in treatment planning for its patients. The Philips AcQsim is the largest bore CT scan available, allowing for maximal patient comfort and convenience. The AcQsim is configured to allow the precise imaging and planning for radiation treatments
