The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is directed by a full time specialist who is also its Chairman and Residency Program Director. The Associate Residency Program Director of the Department is assigned to the day-to day supervision of the residency program curriculum. The Associate Charperson assists with administrative duties and is the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Saint Francis Hospital.

The Active Attending Staff consists of fifty six fully trained Obstetrian/Gynecologists. The staff individually participate as faculty members in the training program, providing the resident physician with a varied, well-rounded approach to Obstetrics and Gynecology. Each staff member also holds a clinical or straight academic rank at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

On-site faculty supervision is provided in established divisions of Maternal-fetal Medicine, Urogynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Gynecologic Oncology, Obstetric and Gynecologic Ultrasonography, and Ambulatory Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The Department occupies a state-of-the art Women's Pavilion with fourteen LDR's, antepartum evaluation and diagnostic center, and a 28 bed neonatal intensive care unit. The Department performs approximately 3,400 deliveries a year.

The new Women's Health Pavilion also contains a fully equipped Ultrasound Laboratory staffed by OB-GYN attendings who perform approximately 7,000-8,000 Obstetrical and targeted Gynecological ultrasounds annually. In the adjacent Antepartum Testing Unit some 9,000 fetal assessments per year are carried out.

Residents gain experience in operative gynecology by working with the attending staff and through their own patients from their continuity practice. Each year 2,000 gynecologic surgical procedures are performed utilizing the latest operative techniques and technology.

The ambulatory obstetrical and gynecological care is provided by the resident staff at two locations -- one in a suite of offices located on the main floor of the Gengras Ambulatory Center on the Saint Francis Campus, and a second, at the Fleet/Burgdorf Ambulatory Care Center within 1 1/2 miles of the hospital. These facilities have been constructed to resemble closely a private practice module and their operation is conducted in conformance with that model. Each facility is staffed by a full-time faculty director responsible for resident teaching and consultation.
